Are you hiding away?
Hi, this is Simon Jordan, and I want to welcome you back to another episode of My Marketing Hints and Tips.
Now, I'm being a bit silly at the beginning. What's the point of starting an episode with an empty chair? But you know what? So many businesses right now, in this time of lockdown, there is showing an empty chair.
There's no communication, nothing! It's crazy! You know, we see all these online fitness people doing free videos over in the UK.
We got Joe Wicks. In fact, he's doing it worldwide, doing these amazing classes early in the morning for everyone, all for free.
So what do you think? When you come out of this, when it will turn around, as we know it will. The world will be different, but we will come out of this, we will come out of lockdown. But you know, when you want to keep that fitness training going, who will you remember? You'll remember Joe Wicks, won't you? Or whoever it is you're following. So what I'm saying is, in your business right now, don't leave the chair empty. Be there. Be present in the face, be it online or wherever, for your target market. No, it's not about sell, sell, sell right now. It's about human connection. It's about sending an email saying, "Let's grab a coffee online together." "Let's see how you're doing." You know? It's about keeping together.
It's about keeping those communication lines open. Even if it's just a "Hi, how are you doing? How are you coping in this time?
" Striking up a conversation. This is the difference between the big corporations who struggle to get that connection, that human connection. We, as small business owners, can do that. We can know our target market personally. We get to know our clients personally. A lot of my clients become good friends. So you can connect with them. It's really important.
Years and years ago I ran a design company. And we were pitching for, it was a huge DIY company called B&Q. And we had the main buyer that came into the studio, and we were showing them, we did the pitch, and blah, blah, blah. And they'd probably seen it 100 times before with lots of other companies. And on the way out, I used to have a big fish tank in the office. And the lady, who was the main buyer, started looking at a fish, and she said, "Oh, I've got some of those fish. How do you do this and do that with them?"
And we struck up a conversation, we struck up a relationship over fish in an aquarium. I was a bit of an aquarium geek back then. And I'm convinced that's what it was that actually sold it. And we ended up working with them. I redesigned all their packaging and all this kind of stuff. It was a brilliant contract.
So what I'm saying right now is, how can you connect with your target market? It's so important to do that.
Don't let this drop-off and hideaway, leave an empty chair.
Be present. Share your wisdom. Share your knowledge. Make phone calls
That is the best thing you can do right now for your business, because for those companies who are not present, who have basically just locked the door and seen this as a holiday, and they're sitting there watching Netflix.
Yes, it's great to have downtime, and it's also a great time to spend time with your family, but in terms of business, you will suffer. I can guarantee it. You need to be present in the target market. You need to be out there creating content and all that kind of stuff, just showing that you are there, to be present.
So please, do not tie it away in your business. Don't close the doors. Yes, stay at home, stay safe, and the rest of it, and social distancing. But you can be present online. Go on Facebook. Share your wisdom. Ask your clients, "How are you doing?" Because that's important. Because if you're not doing that, they will forget about you. They will think, "Well, they haven't bothered. Why should I bother going back when this turns around?"
